I feel crazy these are the things I do CONSTANTLY bite my nails,pick at my cuticles,pick at the skin on my finger tips,bite pieces of skin on my tongue,bite the inside of my cheeks,and smoke cigarettes a pack a day…the thing is i used to have bad anxiety attacks to where i couldnt even go to the grocery store nor drive with out having them,then i went to a crapload of doctors and finally got on meds.I ended up pregnant and had to stop taking em a year and 8 months ago ever since then i started doing MORE of all these picking and biting things….i do not want meds again i have gained control of the anxiety attacks is there any other source?

Dark circles under your eyes, morning fatigue, chronic tiredness, the inability to handle stress, cravings for sweet or salty foods, increased allergy symptoms, mild depression …

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to you? If so then you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue, which doctors estimate affects 80% of the U.S. population. I hadn’t a clue about adrenal exhaustion or fatigue until I realized that I suffered from many of these symptoms, including dark circles under my eyes that would not go away, regardless of how much sleep I got. That’s when I got interested in adrenal fatigue tests and further educating myself about this condition.

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a strangely paradoxical health problem. The adrenal glands, which are tiny pea-sized glands that rest atop the kidneys, do a mighty job in the body. They control and regulate more than 50 hormones in the body, and are primarily responsible for our “stress response.” When we are under stress, the adrenal glands release hormones like cortisol to help us deal with the stress. As you may know, cortisol controls the strength of the immune system, normalizes blood sugar, and regulates blood pressure, among other things. Too much cortisol can trigger autoimmune responses in the body, as well as cause weight gain. Cortisol is also related to our body’s primitive “fight or flight” response.

So we rely on our adrenal glands to help us deal with and handle stress, which is a good thing. The bad news is that when we are subject to prolonged stress, the adrenal glands are the first to fail. The adrenal glands can function at high capacity for only so long before they break down. In fact, what most people call a “nervous breakdown” is really adrenal fatigue.

Since about 80% of the current population has adrenal exhaustion or fatigue, it’s clear that most of us are subject to prolonged stress. These stressors come from too little sleep, too much caffeine, multi-tasking, poor nutrition, and too much work. Sound familiar?

Adrenal Fatigue Tests – Three Self Tests

So how do you know if you are among the 80% who have adrenal fatigue? Well, examining your lifestyle is one easy way to tell. Plus, if you seem to be unable to catch up on your sleep or are chronically tired and grumpy, you’re likely to have this problem. But there are three adrenal fatigue tests you can administer to see if your adrenal glands are screaming for help.

1. Ragland’s Test

You’ll need a home blood pressure machine for this test (you can buy one for around $10 at any drug store). First, take your blood pressure while sitting down. Then, stand up and take your blood pressure again, right away. Your systolic number (the first or top number) should have increased by 8 or 10 points. If the number dropped, then you probably have adrenal fatigue. 

2. Pupil Dilation

For this test you need a flashlight and a mirror. Look into the mirror and shine the flashlight into the pupil of one eye. Your pupil should contract pretty quickly. If your pupil does not contract after 30 seconds, or even dilates, then your adrenals need some help.

3. Pain and Sensitivity

Your adrenal glands sit right on top of your kidneys. If you palpate that area and feel pain, then your adrenal glands are fatigued. You can also try pressing on the reflexology point for the adrenal glands, which is located at the top inside edge of your foot arch. If that area is sensitive, then so are your adrenal glands. 

Adrenal Fatigue Treatment

My physician recommended several approaches to dealing with this situation, and I’ve found three of them help me the most: 

1. Herbal Support

I’m taking an herbal formula called X51 (or Eleviv) from XanGo that works well. It contains four main ingredients that offer adrenal support: citrus sinensis, eurycoma longifolia suntheanine, and camellia sinensis. Other people use straight herbal tinctures.

2. Order My Life

By focusing on a routine and sticking to it, I reduce the level of over stimulation in my life. I try to check email and voice mail less often, and have more “quiet time” to myself.

3. Rest at 10, 2 and 4

Apparently the adrenal glands tend to become most fatigued at these times, so I stop for short 15-minute power naps at these times. Lying down is recommended, if at all possible, so I do for my power naps.

It can take time to help your adrenals recover — anywhere from 6 to 24 months, depending on how stressed they are. The good news is that recovery can be taken in baby steps, not radical changes. I like that, don’t you?

Recently I wrote the popular Time Tested Sinusitis Herbal Remedies article found on many health related websites. I’ve received numerous emails and comments with people stating they’ve already found sinus relief with these remedies, but also many have said they couldn’t find the recommended sinusitis herbal remedies. So here is another list of time tested sinusitis herbal remedies that hopefully you’ll find at your local health care store.

Goldenseal innate properties make this another fabulous remedy for sinusitis. It has antimicrobial properties to help fight bacteria and is also classified as a drying herb. In its natural form this plant prefers a high amount of water and therefore taken as a tea or capsule helps dry out the sinus congestion found in sinusitis. If you suffer from sinusitis where mucus predominates this herb is perfect for you. As a tincture take about ½ dropper full three times a day diluted in warm water. If you prefer to take capsules studies show taking 50mg 3 times a day.

Another herb very similar to Goldenseal is Yerba Mansa. Although it is not in the same plant family, the innate medicinal qualities mirror each others. Along with its drying properties it excels and reducing inflamed tissues. This is especially important for sinusitis. Reducing the inflammation of the mucus membranes in the sinus passages is a sure way to find symptom relief. Using this herb as a tincture is the best method. I talked last time about using the essential oils of Eucalyptus in a steam inhalation to find symptomatic relief. An herb that you can use at home is Sage. Throwing a handful of sage into a pot of hot water, cover it and bring to a boil. Then remove the post from the stove and inhale the steam with a towel draped over your head. The oils extracted by this process act as a natural decongestant.

Lastly is salt water. The ionic composition of salt water makes this an ideal solution for sinus irrigation. Many people have tried sinus irrigation techniques but with distilled or tap water and have either found temporary or no relief at all. If your cat is once again showing signs of coming down with UTI, then make the most out of your next vet visit. Ask the doctor about the probable causes of the relapse. These relapses are especially common during the next two weeks after your pet is discharged from hospitalization. What else can you do to avoid a recurrence aside from giving the cat a special diet, providing it lots of fresh drinking water, keeping it’s litter box clean at all times, and providing extra loving care?

When you take your cat to the vet for treatment, chances are antibiotics will be administered to ‘heal’ infections. These are common solutions for cat urinary problem. But the problem with antibiotics is that your cat may develop a certain immunity to it over time; thus, the next round of antibiotics might not work as well as it did the first time. In this case, your vet may prolong the administration period. This might be harmful to your cat in the long term.

Another problem with antibiotics is that it can work all too well. It can also kill the ‘good’ bacteria in your cat’s body, bringing down its immunity. Things must be put back to balance for your cat to remain healthy. Just like humans, cats can also access ‘alternative’ means to healing. If you don’t want to subject your kitty to more drugs, then homeopathic therapy or natural solutions might be right for you.

Throughout the world people are turning to herbal remedies, but many are intimidated by the complex jargon that masks the simplicity of homemade herbal cures. Using herbs to ease common ailments has been around since the beginning of time and the only thing that prevents individuals from utilizing these common home remedies is the medical jargon that disguises simple preparations as something far too complex for the layman to tackle.

Well, that’s a lie. If our ancestors could mix up a tincture or infusion, so can you. So I’ve decided to put together a series of articles on simple herbal preparations that anyone, yes anyone, can make.

What is a Tincture?

A tincture is a solution of herbs in alcohol. Apple cider vinegar may be used in some special preparations. The alcohol dissolves all of the chemical principals of the plant and acts as a preservative for future use.

How is a tincture prepared?

Tinctures in alcohol are made by steeping herbs in rectified spirits or alcohol, by heating herbs and alcohol at various temperatures, or by filtering alcohol through herbs, (similar to the way you brew a pot of coffee, by suspending the herbs in a filter, and the alcohol drips down through the soluble plant material and the herb-saturated alcohol is then used.)

The alcohol used to make a tincture is not rubbing alcohol but a 90 proof spirit, such as vodka, gin or brandy.

Basic Tincture Technique

The easiest way to make a tincture is to steep herbs in vodka, gin, whiskey, or brandy. This way your herbs can be taken internally. Use (1) pint of ninety proof alcohol (as suggested above) with 4 ounces of cut herbs. Allow the herbs and alcohol to steep for 2 weeks. Strain out the herbs, then bottle and label your tincture.

How to use your tincture

Drops of tincture may be added to hot or cold herbal teas for drinking, or may be added to water for external use on compresses. Tinctures can also be added to oils or fats for an instant healing ointment.

Sample Tincture

Comfrey is wonderful example of a healing tincture well worth keeping on hand. For a full list of this herbs properties, please see my article on Comfrey. Tincture of Comfrey can be added to any compress to treat injuries such as cuts and bruising. It will help to alleviate the pain and promote healing; in fact, its healing ability is nothing short of miraculous.

When a client comes to me with mood balance problems, I almost always offer them a specially formulated traditional herbal tonic as part of my comprehensive approach to Mood and Energy Wellness.

My clients (and I personally) find these tonics to be a key asset in maintaining stable, balanced, centered, and harmonious moods throughout the day.

The exact formulation of herbal tinctures that I combine for each client varies and is proprietary.

Generally these are the herbs I choose from for their effects on depression, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, and nervousness.

St. John’s Wort

Many studies attest to the ability of St. John’s Wort to positively affect depression. St. John’s Wort has at least 10 active ingredients that help in relieving depression. As proven as those active ingredients are, never forget that the whole herb is going to be more powerful than its extracted ingredients. St. John’s Wort helps relieve depression by:

• Acting like a Serotonin Reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) similar to SSRI anti-depressant medications. 
• Acting as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor keeping this neurotransmitter at optimal levels. Low norepinephrine levels results in fatigue and lack of energy. Optimal norepinephrine levels are important for cardiovascular functioning, thermal regulation, vascular functioning (blood vessels) and act in the central nervous system to improve mood and concentration.
• Inhibits excessive cortisol secretion.
• Lifts dopamine levels. Low levels of dopamine leave you without adequate motivation and prone to compulsions and additions.
• Enhances the activity of the natural tranquilizer GABA in the brain.

A number of studies have demonstrated the efficacy of St. John’s Wort in improving depression symptoms with approximately 80% of people using St. John’s Wort finding relief.

Black Cohosh

Black Cohosh is an analgesic nervine relaxant and helps correct low estrogen states in depression. Black Cohosh is especially indicated for deep dark depression that seems to descend out of nowhere. It raises mood and increases non- specific immunity, which makes it especially helpful when depression occurs in conjunction with chronic illness.

Siberian Ginseng acts as both a mild tranquilizer and neurostimulant and has both a calming and a stimulating effect useful in both manic or depressive phases and sedation and arousal depressive states. The stimulation achieved with Siberian Ginseng does not produce nervousness and over stimulation but rather a relaxed sense of well-being – calming and at the same time invigorating.

It can raise norepinephrine levels helping to induce movement and motivation for desired projects. Plus, it works as a nerve tonic to calm the agitation that can come with depression.

Siberian Ginseng is particularly supportive for stressed and overtaxed adrenals and because adrenal gland tissue is neuroendocrine tissue, Siberian Ginseng provides the adrenal support along with brain support.
