Diarrhea is a very common ailment and there are several herbal remedies that can help you get through it and recover. There are many over-the-counter medicines for diarrhea, but they often stop the course too quickly and leave you constipated and the intestines irritated. Herbs can help soothe the intestines and nourish the whole digestive tract.
Causes of diarrhea include stress, infection, an unbalanced diet, bacteria in food and many more. On the most part, you should let it run its course, about 6-12 hours to shed any toxins, bacteria or virus that may have caused it. If it lasts for 2-3 days though, consult your doctor.
Here are some herbal remedies you may want to try:
• Blackberry root tincture-take 1/2 teaspoon at the first sign of diarrhea and every 30 minutes until symptoms subside.
• Blackberry root tea-combine 2 parts blackberry root and 1 part licorice root and make a tea. Drink 3-4 cups a day.
• Blackberry juice, tea, wine or berries. Blackberry is your go-to fruit to alleviate diarrhea.
• Blueberries-eat a cup of fresh blueberries.
• White oak bark tincture-take 1/2 teaspoon every 30 minutes.
• Witch hazel bark tincture-not the extract in pharmacies. Use the leaf as a tea for children.
• Raspberry leaf tea-drink 3-4 cups a day.
• Marsh mallow tincture-take 1/2 teaspoon every 30 minutes until symptoms subside.
• Licorice tincture-take 1/2 teaspoon every 30 minutes.
• Slippery elm tincture-take 1/2 teaspoon every 30 minutes.
• Slippery elm powder-mix with oatmeal for a soothing meal.
You can become dehydrated very quickly with diarrhea so make sure you drink plenty of water in addition to the teas to stay hydrated. Especially watch little children, they can become dehydrated very fast. Keep some of these tinctures in your home to be prepared.
