Discover the mot beneficial and researched sinusitis herbal treatments. Find quick relief by focusing your treatment on the following herbs.

In the United States there has been an explosive use of herbal remedies for sinusitis. This is partly due to the inadequate treatments that conventional medicine has (mainly antibiotics and decongestants) as well as the huge increase of those suffering from sinusitis. Over the last decade it is estimated that over 31 million adults suffer from sinusitis. But what makes sinusitis herbal remedies superior to conventional treatments?

It all revolves around the philosophy between the two opposing groups. Conventional medical treatments focus on treatments to manage symptoms with decongestants and antibiotics. As more and more research comes out it is becoming clear that bacterial infection of the sinuses is a symptom and not the cause of sinusitis. The inflamed tissue or excessive mucus becomes a great incubator for bacteria. Removing the bacteria does relieve some symptoms but not the underlying cause. Those using herbs typically focusing on treating the cause, as each sinusitis remedy has a multitude of medicinal properties. This difference accounts for why many sinusitis sufferers find better relief with herbal remedies.

Take a look at one of the most popular sinusitis herbal remedy Eucalyptus. Its innate properties include an antiseptic, decongestant and mucolytic. Just one herb treats both the cause, excessive mucus accumulation, and the symptoms; thus superior to traditional treatments. The essential oil and leaves can be used. Take boiling water, add in a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil and breathe the steam at least twice daily. You’ll be surprised how quickly your sinusitis problems clear up. The leaves can also be steeped and used as a medicinal tea. Drink it three times a day.

Another famous herb that has extensive research is peppermint. Its medicinal qualities help soothe the mucosal lining in the sinuses, which the irritation of this lining produces the excessive mucus commonly found in sinusitis. It also acts as a decongestant. As above you can either use its essential oil as a steam inhalation or the leaves as a tea. Use the tea if you are also suffering from stomach upset with your sinusitis. Both are therapeutically beneficial for sinusitis.

Ginger also warrants a lot of attention as a sinusitis herbal remedy. Gingers properties increase blood flow to the sinus passages and can raise the local temperature. This increase in temperature boosts the local immune cell population, helping fight and clear any local bacterial or viral infection that has been established. For those who have the symptom of dizziness with sinusitis, this is the herb for you. Drinking a small cup of ginger tea three times daily has been shown to help reduce sinusitis problems. Expect to sweat slightly after each tea.

Horseradish is the last of the big sinusitis herbal remedies. The reason why it doesn’t get much attention is because of its pungent taste – but this is one of the most important properties. The pungent property is an effective decongestant, opening up the sinus passages quickly and allowing proper drainage of mucus. It also has slight antibacterial properties. Most horseradish properties are extracted in a small amount of alcohol (called a tincture), which also has medicinal properties for the sinus passages. Taking this tincture three times a day is also the recommended dosing schedule.

There are many other herbs that fit as a sinusitis herbal remedy, but the above are the ones with the most positive research behind them. They are the herbs I focus on with my patients. As with all medical recommendations, please consult your local physician before making any medical decision.

You're low, you're tired, you don't have the sexual drive you had last month? This is quite common, most of us will feel this at some stage. DAMIANA is a natural herbal treatment that can help restore your interest in sex, and banish the blues.

Damiana (Turnera Diffusa, or Turnera Aphrodisiaca) has a well-established reputation in folk-medicine as an Aphrodisiac. Claims that a plant is an ‘aphrodisiac’ are often far-fetched, and based more on expectations of results, than their true effect. But Damiana definitely does help, if nervous tension, anxiety, or depression are at the root of loss of your libido. And it helps both men and women equally, unlike Viagra, (scary stuff! which messes with your heart-rhythms, and worse!)

Damiana acts as a tonic for the whole nervous system, and the benefit of that is a subtle ‘lift’ in mood. We all have problems in our lives that make us tense or tired. Work situations, financial pressures, deadlines to meet, family worries, etc, that push sexual pleasure out of the window! What better ally can we have than a strengthening tonic, working for us in the background, helping to restore our connections to our healthy, happy, natural selves?

As a strengthening herb, it will help with sexual stamina and performance.

It is considered a safe herb to take, though it is inadvisable to use Damiana if you are suffering from diabetes, as it can affect blood-sugar levels (usually quite undramatically, but possibly in an unpredictable way if you are diabetic.)

Apart from its positive results with jaded sexual appetite, this herb has other talents. It is extremely helpful in inflammations and irritations of the urinary system; is useful for painful periods (dysmenorhoea) and can also help with headaches originating from nervous tension or anxiety.

There are many Damiana products on the market, as this wonderful herb increases in popularity. Herbal Tinctures are a very fuss-free and convenient way to take herbs. Research tends to the view that tinctures (particularly alcohol-based ones) are absorbed more quickly and efficiently by the digestive system, more convenient than herbal teas or decoctions, and far more effective than taking herbal tablets.

(We stock DAMIANA Herbal Tincture in 50ml. and 100ml bottles, in our online store at http://www.herbaltincturesonline.co.uk where we also have a wide selection of herbal tinctures at very moderate prices. So why not visit us? We also have a ‘Feedback’ page, where you can communicate with us directly, leave your tales, comments, questions, or just chat! We’d love to hear from you!)

There are natural ways of relieving anxieties and helping you to sleep without having to depend on drugs.

Find yourself having high anxiety levels with panic attack symptoms? Not only that, find yourself unable to sleep at night because of the stress? If you are having difficulties in coping, you may wish to consider using a herbal remedy for anxiety and insomnia. This is a good option to take rather than turning to drugs for relief.

A herbal remedy that is most appropriate in relieving anxiety and insomnia symptoms is the valerian. The wonderful part about using this herb is that it works to calm your nerves without many of the side effects that drugs have.

Valerian has a pungent smell, but this is considered insignificant compared to the amount of benefits that you can derive from this herbal remedy. Galen, a Greek physician, nicknamed this herb phu, but its scientific name is known as Valeriana officinalis. There has been much research done on this medicinal herb and its healing properties. Its most important being some chemicals called valepotriates that it contains. These chemicals apparently depresses some
activity of the nervous system.

Herbalists describe valerian as a dry, cool and bitter. Other substances that are in Valerian
include alkaloids, volatile oils (including borneol and isovalerianic), and inridoids. Valerian is used for many different ailments, including as an expectorant, tranquilizer, diuretic, lowering blood pressure, antispasmodic, carminative, and as a mild anodyne.

The root is the commonly used part of the plant in the making of a herbal remedy. It can be used
to treat insomnia, anxiety, and strengthening of your heart. It is sometimes used for treating ulcers and wounds as well. This herb is normally harvested in fall.

There are many ways that you can prepare a valerian herbal remedy. Firstly, you can prepare the valerian root into a maceration. Take two tablespoons of the chopped, fresh valerian root and soak it in a cup of cool water for approximately eight hours. Other herbs can be combined as well into this concoction, including peppermint, which can make it taste slightly better. A valerian root hot tea is another great choice to help decrease your anxiety and insomnia symptoms as well.

Secondly, it is possible to make a potent tincture out of the Valerian root as well. This will help to relieve the symptoms of insomnia and anxiety. Start with low dosages of Valerian around 1-2ml. You should know that it is very normal to get headaches when using the Valerian and by starting your dosage lower, you can help keep this symptom at bay. You can gradually increase the Valerian if needed.

Thirdly, you can also make a compress out of Valerian. Additionally, for muscle cramps, simply
soak a clean pad in the tincture and place it on the area where you are having pain.

Fourthly, if you need to drawing splinters out and treating wounds and chronic ulcers, a valerian
herbal wash is most helpful. Use the wash over your cuts and pains.

Before you jump right in and use the valerian, it is important that you consult your doctor if it is
safe for you to do so. You may already be taking some drugs at the same time. You will need to determine if you need to stop taking them should you wish to try the valerian root for relieving your anxiety and insomnia symptoms. Also, if you are pregnant, or have some serious conditions, always check with your doctor first.

Sinusitis herbal remedies include a wealth of various herbs. Using a combination of herbs in a tincture can be more effective than taking them in capsule or other forms.

Sinusitis herbal remedies are so numerous that if one or more don’t help you another one will.

All of these herbs have been used to treat and prevent sinusitis:
Purple Coneflower (Echinacea)
Ephedra
Goldenseal
Oregon grape
Horseradish (if you’ve ever eaten horseradish, you know that fire that opens up the sinuses)
Poke root
Yarrow
Garlic
Wild indigo
Elder flowers

One doctor skilled in herbal therapy recommends mixing one part each of tinctures of eyebright, goldenseal, yarrow, horseradish and ephedra. Every two hours put thirty drops under your tongue. Then decrease the dose frequency to four times per day until the symptoms subside.

If the inflamed sinuses become infected take this mixture of sinusitis herbal remedies:
Two parts of purple coneflower
Two parts of wild indigo
One part of poke root
Take thirty drops every hour until the infection improves, then decrease to four times daily.

Wow with all those herbs something ought to be helping by now. But if your sinusitis persists you may want to add stinging nettles, elder flowers, goldenrod as a tincture and eyebright compound.

Perhaps you’re not familiar with tinctures. Tinctures are more powerful and last longer than just using the dried herb itself. They are prepared by placing cut or powdered loose herbs into a glass jar. Then pour 80 to 100 proof Vodka or rum over the herbs until they are covered. Now add one or two more inches of alcohol to the jar. Seal the jar tightly and put it into a paper bag or dark place. Shake the jar every day. Complete the processing of the tincture at the end of this 2 weeks of extracting the herb into the liquid.

Some herbalists recommend mixing the tincture ingredients at the new moon and letting them sit the 2 weeks until the full moon for the best natural drawing power.

Use cheese cloth to strain the alcohol-herbal mixture into a different glass jar. Put the tincture in a dark glass bottle with a dropper for the lid. Be sure to screw lid on very snugly.

Be sure to label your bottles.

Substitute water, vinegar or glycerin for the alcohol if you are sensitive to alcohol. If alcohol is not a problem for you, then use rum to make your tinctures because it masks the bitterness of the herbs.

You can also use herbs in your solutions for nasal lavage. Add one teaspoon of powdered goldenseal to 1 cup of warm water and stir well. Use this solution to wash your nostrils with a Neti pot or waterpic.

Or maybe you would rather inhale steam than do the nasal lavage. Add small amounts of aromatic herbs like mint or eucalyptus to the boiling water to increase the effectiveness of the steam in your sinusitis herbal remedies.

Be very cautious. Don’t burn yourself. Drape a towel over your head as you bend over the steaming water. To move the herbal remedy as far as possible into your lungs, take a very deep breath.

You can also apply a hot compress over your sinuses for three minutes followed by a cold compress for thirty seconds. Repeat the alternating hot and cold compresses for at least 3 times, ending with the cold compress.

Now your have a great arsenal of herbs to add to your sinusitis herbal remedies.

Herbs are taken in Tinctures, Decoctions, Capsules, Powders, Infusions, pills, syrups, ointments, and many more ways too!

Tinctures
Most Herbs recommended throughout this Site can be taken as tinctures. Tinctures are easy to take and powerfully absorbed quickly. Tinctures are very highly concentrated. You can buy them ready made or make them yourself!

To take an Herb TONIC as a tincture that means the dose is between 1/2 teaspoon to a full(1) teaspoon, 3 X day. Start with 1/2 teaspoon for those of you who have known sensitivities or allergy reactions, then if you feel fine increase it to full strength. Tinctures usually taste bad and must be diluted with water, juice or whatever works for you.

Most Herbs that are taken for ongoing conditions (like building bone density, Longetevity, stopping hot flashes)are taken 3-4 times a day, every day. That would be called a tonic. 3 X day or 3-4 X day. In many Cultures everybody over 40 takes daily Beauty and Longetivity Tonics.

When Sally told me how exhausted and fatigued she felt, I suggested Siberian Ginseng(Eleuthrococcus Senticosis),as an Energy Tonic. That means taking a teaspoon of Tincture 3 X DAY,EVERYDAY. Mixing it in water, juice, etc.. and gulping it down…. 3 X DAY! After a week or two, she called to tell me how Great she felt, and that her endurance and stamina were coming back. I wasn’t surprised, since Eleuthrococcus well known to boost energy levels. In fact, it was used in Russia by Olympic Athletes, to Cosmonauts, to factory workers. And studied extensively.

Infusions is a fancy way of saying “tea”. Just like when you make tea, you pour boiling water over some leaves or flowers. That’s what you do to make an infusion. A therapeutic dose will be one teaspoon per cup. and let it stay for 10-15 minutes. Then you can add sweetener, juice or whatever you need to do to make it a Happy part of your routine.

If you are taking Herbs as Teas or infusions, then you should drink 3 cups of very strong tea (1 teaspoon-cup) per day to see solid results.

The traditional TCM way to take herbs is Decoctions. that means boiling Herbs that look like roots and barks for hours. Very few people are able to devote that kind of time, and also it smells and tastes pretty vile!

Another way to take herbs is in capsules, pills and powders. An assumed standard dose would be to take 2- 500-650mg. capsules 3X day or equivalent tablet-of a standard Herb preparation. Unless stated otherwise of course.

Herbal Tinctures
Also called Ethinol Extracts, are a popular way to take herb tonics. Tinctures are easy to take and powerfully absorbed pretty quickly. They highly concentrated.

Herbal Tonics
Most Herbs that are taken for ongoing conditions (like building bone density, Longetivity, strength etc.)are taken as tinctures, powders, capsules or pills 3-4 times a day, every day. That would be called a Tonic.
3 X day or 3-4 X day.

Acute Herb Use If Herbs are taken for an acute situation they are taken more often. To take a fever down you could give a tea of Honeysuckle flowers, every hour or so.

Acute situations need herbs more often for a day or so. Tonics are taken day in and day out.

Nicotine is such a powerful agent, it is not going to submit to any type of auto suggestion, or verbal arguments.

Nicotine is such a powerful agent, it is not going to submit to any type of auto suggestion, or verbal arguments. When over the counter medications fail, any types of reasonings will not have the desired effect, you have another alternative to try—stop smoking herbal products. In any area relating to health, if past experience and experiments are any indications, herbal stop smoking methods are bound to succeed. Another important thing—they don’t create any side effects.

The connection of nicotine is directly with the brain. Even your intelligent brain thinks that nicotine is giving it the pleasure, and it accordingly sends you signals for more and more pleasure. You obey the command and light another cigarette. The cycle goes on and more and more pleasure is demanded. You become the cigarette addict. Now, smoking is not your view of life, it is a way of life.

There is nothing that the Nature does not know about you. It knows your strength. It knows about your weakness. It has remedies in store. This traditional herbal knowledge has brought the humanity from the brink of precipice many a times, in many areas. In the area of smoking also it is making significant contributions to make you quit smoking. The garden variety oats is used to treat opium withdrawal. With the application of the same reasoning, an alcoholic extract of the herb, in the form of a tincture is used for nicotine withdrawal. It has provided highly beneficial results.{mospagebreak}

Another mixture of the herbal tinctures of white-horse hound, mullein, green oats, peppermint, and golden seal, in appropriate quantities, put on the tongue in drops, whenever you have the craving to smoke a cigarette, gives you good results.

Acupuncture also does the supportive role. Mixture of the prescribed medicated oil is applied to the acupuncture points. This needs to be done by a acupuncture specialist only.

Many such natural herbal kits are available. Natural products also have taken the seat of over the counter medications. There are herbal aromas, herbal cigarettes, herbal liquids, herbal lozenges and many such products out to help you in your effort to stop smoking. Over all these products, one thing reigns supreme- Your strong will power to quit smoking for ever!

You may find it difficult to believe—but it is true! If you don’t smoke the next cigarette, and resist the temptation to smoke the next to next cigarette, you are on the winning spree. You have already purchased the last cigarette of your lifetime!

Everything you ever wanted to know about herbalism.

Since prehistory, humans are known to use herbs as remedies for all kinds of ailments and over a thousand species of plants were recorded for their healing properties. A good example is the depiction of plants as healing agents in the Lascaux caves in France which was dated with Radiocarbon dating process and the result revealed that it was made between 13,000-25,000 BCE

Chemical compounds produced in plants especially those made to protect themselves against predators such as toxins and to fertilize such as pollens, are all known to have therapeutic actions to human bodies. Some well known examples are inulin from the roots of dahlias, quinine from the cinchona, morphine and codeine from the poppy, and digoxin from the foxglove.

Today, herbal medicines are categorized as complementary and alternative medicines (CAM). CAMs are becoming very popular but especially so in Europe where CAMs are mainly produced.

There are numerous types of CAMs, but the most popular of all are herbal teas which are made mainly of leaves, roots and barks of plants. Well known herbal teas are chamomile, peppermint and ginger teas.

Second most popular remedy is the herbal tinctures, which are made by soaking the medicinal parts of plants in alcohol extracts and as a result, they can be stored for a much longer period of time. An herbalist can combine many tinctures and made them into one formula for a particular patient. Similarly, fluid extracts of plants are made in the same way as the tinctures, except that they are much stronger.

Powdered herbs and tablets are probably the easiest to consume and nowadays almost every medicinal herb has been made into tablet and capsule forms. However, some traditional herbalists may argue that the process in making tablets and powder which involve heating and drying may reduce the medicinal properties of the plants.

Herbal ointments and essential oils are for external use only. Ointments are used to treat wounds and rashes, while essential oils are used mainly because of their therapeutic scents that are believed to have effects to the human body and mind. This type of therapy is called aromatherapy and is increasingly becoming very popular all over the world.

Herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years and are hear to stay. They provide a great alternative to over the counter medicne at a greatly reduced price. Anyone who is considering to try an herbal remedy should give it a go because the Pro’s greatly out weight the Con’s.

Plasters, Compresses, and Poultices

These are ways of applying herbal remedies directly to the skin. Plasters and compresses are cotton bandages soaked in infusions or decoctions and wrapped around the affected area or held on with pressure. Compresses are also warm.

Poultices are made by moistening herbs, placing them on the skin, and holding them there with a bandage. Moistened and warmed herbal tea bags also help soothe and heal. Try using chamomile tea bags to relieve the itching and inflammation of insect bites and eczema.

Powders

Powders are dried herbs ground to a fine consistency. You can sprinkle them over food, stir them into a liquid such as juice or water for tonics, or add them to soup stocks. You also can take them in capsule or tablet form.

Salves, Ointments, and Creams

These preparations combine a medicinal herb with an oily base for external use. Creams are light and slightly oily, to blend with the skin’s secretions and allow the active ingredients to penetrate the skin. The heavier and oilier salves and ointments apply protective remedies to the skin surface.

Syrups

Syrups are used to improve the taste of bitter herbal formulas and to administer soothing cough or throat medicines. Herbs often taken in syrup form include wild cherry, marshmallow root, and licorice.

Teas, Infusions, and Decoctions

People have been consuming herbal teas for as long as they have known how to heat water since well before recorded history. Unlike green, black, and oolong teas, herbal teas can be made from virtually any plant, and from any part of the plant, including the roots, flowers, seeds, berries, or bark. There are some herbs, such as echinacea, ginkgo leaf, saw palmetto, and milk thistle, that are not effective at healing when taken in tea form because their active components are not water soluble, and the concentration needed for medicinal potency is so high it can be obtained only from an extract, pill, or capsule.

Different herbal teas, which sometimes contain thou-sands of beneficial active compounds, have their own distinctive healing uses. According to Varro Tyler, Ph.D., professor emeritus of pharmacognosy (the study of natural drug properties) at Purdue University, herbal teas are very good for relieving mild to moderate ailments such as upset stomach, sore throat, coughs, stuffy nose, and insomnia.

Many herbal teas are available in tea bag form. They can also be prepared from the raw herb. To make an herbal tea, gently crumble leaves and flowers and break roots and barks into pieces (cutting the herbs causes the essential oils to dissipate) and place them in a ceramic or glass container. Cover the herb parts with boiling water (do not bring the herbs themselves to a boil), and allow them to steep. Most herbs should be steeped for four to six minutes, although some herbal teas, such as chamomile, need to be steeped for fifteen to twenty minutes in a covered container in order to deliver their full therapeutic effect. Other herbs, such as ginseng roots, can be boiled. Astragalus can be lightly simmered for several hours. In fact, in Asia, ginseng root, astragalus, dong quai, and other herbs are added to chicken broth to make a tonic soup that is both food and medicine.

Infusion is simply another term for tea. This is the easiest way to take herbal remedies. To make an infusion, you simply boil water and add leaves, stems, flowers, or powdered herbs plant material whose active ingredients dissolve readily in hot water then steep, strain, and drink the mixture as a tea.

A decoction is a tea made from thicker plant parts, such as bark, roots, seeds, or berries. These also contain lignin, a substance that is difficult to dissolve in water. Thus, decoctions require a more vigorous extraction method than infusions.

Tinctures

Plant components that are either insoluble or only partially soluble in water can be extracted with solvents such as alcohol or glycerol. The herb is soaked in the solvent for a period of time, then pressed to render the tincture. Tinctures can preserve extracted ingredients for twelve months or more.

Vinegars

Herbal vinegars can serve as both medicines and salad dressings. To make an herbal vinegar, add the herb or herbs of your choice to raw apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, rice vinegar, or malt vinegar. Allow the herbs to steep for four days (agitate the container daily), strain, and then press through a straining cloth and bottle in a dark glass container.

Wines

Steeping herbs in wine is a novel and pleasant way to use them medicinally. Wine does not keep as long as the stronger alcohols, so refrigeration is a good idea.

In the days of ancient medicine, every herb had to be made into a tea or paste of some sort to be consumed for its healthy benefits. This is true for milk thistle as well.

When it’s purplish flower starts to die and wither away, the seeds that are left in it contain silymarin, the vital ingredient that provides the best kind of detoxification for your liver. Would you like to know how to make milk thistle extract and how to use it for these kinds of healthy benefits?

Most of us do not have a clue how to make homemade medicinal remedies. What would you do with milk thistle seeds once you have harvested them from the dying plant?

Would you just eat them like they are? Are you supposed to boil them in water? Do you add any other kinds of ingredients to make the seeds more beneficial?

How to Make Milk Thistle Extract

1. The first step you will want to to do when making milk thistle extract is gather the seeds from the dead flower. Put these seeds into a grinder or a blender. Ground them into fine bits.

2. For the next step, you are going to need 100 proof medicinal alcohol. Vodka and brandy will work as well as long as they are 100 proof in alcohol volume. Many people use white kitchen vinegar in the place of the alcohol.

3. Use three quarters of one cup of your ground milk thistle seeds and place them into a glass jar that holds a pint. Add one cup of the alcohol or vinegar plus one cup of water.

4. Shake the mixture up well and store in a dark, cool place for at least 6 weeks.

5. Keep an eye on it to make sure the seeds are always under the liquid mixture to prevent molding.

The Best Way to Get Milk Thistle

While making your own tinctures is great, the best advice I have for those who want the benefits of herbal extracts is to choose the best multivitamin brand that has these extracts in it.

Aside from silymarin are alfalfa, turmeric, bacopa, and ginger extracts that are going to help you on the road of excellent health.

There have been many advances in nutritional science that show that when you blend many ingredients together in the proper way, the health benefits can be enhanced many times over.

Learning how to make milk thistle extract is great, but the best and safest way to get what you need for your liver from this natural ingredient is to make sure it is in your multivitamin supplement.
