Other ways to stop an asthma attack besides inhaler?

My friend had an asthma attack and we couldn't find her inhaler, i told her to drink hot tea but it didn't work. she eventually calmed herself down a bit and found her inhaler. But if we cant i want to know how to help if she doesn't have it. What are ways to stop the attack? at least until we can get more help. I heard honey in a wet towel can stop but i didn't want to just be trying stuff and it make it worse.

I provided, in a recent previous article, instruction on preparing a tincture from your herb garden plants, so if you have carried out those instructions you are ready to learn how you can make your own throat sprays, gargles, mouthwashes and inhalants which can all be made from your tinctures. What better herb garden delight is there than that.

The tincture is the result of extracting the oils – the chemical components of each herb, made by soaking the herb in a mixture of water and alcohol. Because the alcohol acts as a preservative, the tincture is wholesome and usable for at least two years if stored in a cool dark place.

Do not forget that when the tincture is to be used for children or if you prefer not to drink alcohol yourself, heat the potion to nearly boiling so that the alcohol will evaporate away. This will of course leave a higher concentrate of the medicinal content in the potion.

Herbs can be used in many different ways to treat anything from acne to worms but for the purpose of this article we shall concentrate on remedies for treating various respiratory, nose and throat infections by using tinctures of Echinacea, chamomile, cinnamon, golden seal, and hyssop. These can then be used variously as teas, compresses, inhalants, gargles, or like any medicine; a teaspoonful at a time.

To combat a heavy cold or influenza, make up a cup of tea with two teaspoons of Echinacea in a cup of hot water (to remove the alcohol use near boiling water and allow to cool down to drinkable temperature). This may be sweetened with a spoonful of honey. Instead of two spoons of Echinacea use one plus a spoonful of chamomile or even cinnamon as alternative concoctions and see which is most comforting.

For treating sinus problems, catarrh, excess mucus; use teas made individually, or as mixtures, of golden seal, hyssop and cinnamon. Again a spoonful of honey may help the medicine go down. Any of these tinctures (try any combination to find which suits you best ) put into a small bowl filled with boiling water will make a pleasant inhalant. Just cover your head over the bowl with a large towel and breathe in the fumes.

A sore throat can be treated by gargling with a strong tea made from any single one, or mixtures, of these herb tinctures. Just make up a small glassful with water as hot as you can comfortably use and gargle immediately. Again, to remove the alcohol use near boiling water and allow to cool down to a usable temperature. A throat spray can be prepared in the same way. For a freshening mouthwash, make up a small amount of strong just warmed tincture and water mix in a small glass. Thoroughly rinse around your mouth and spit out until all used. Do this three or four times a day while symptoms persist.

Another way to ease a sore throat or blocked nose is by making a hot compress. Use a clean flannel or small towel soaked in and rung out from a strong mixture of herbal tinctures and water as hot as you can bear. Put on your chest, or round your neck, or even wrapped around your face. Feel the heat and breathe the fumes for immediate comfort.

At the end of a busy day put several spoonfuls of a tincture into a hot footbath. This will comfort and refresh your feet, and inhaling the fumes will soothe and relax you helping you to fall into bed for a deep rejuvenating sleep.

It’s that time of year when you are ready to harvest and gather up your herbs for the winter. The question is how can you best preserve your herbs for future use or for selling. Many herbalists use many methods to preserve plants such as drying for teas or potpourri, juice as an extract or powder for capsules, but one of the most reliable techniques for long lasting preservation is tincturing.

Tinctures are ground up herbs soaked in solvents, such as water, vinegar, honey, wine, glycerin or alcohol in order to extract the essential elements from the plant. Using alcohol or vodka and water allows the tincture to last a very long time as the alcohol preserves the tincture. You will need at least 30% alcohol to dissolve the herb. Vodka is 40% alcohol and 60% water.

The supplies you need to make a tincture are; herbs, glass jars with lids, alcohol, cheesecloth, and a grinder. To prepare the tincture first you need to grind the herbs into a course powder and put them into the jar. Cover the herbs with the alcohol and stir. Cover and store for at least 10-14 days. Try to shake the jar every day and top off with alcohol if it settles below the level of the herbs as it should remain one-fourth inch above the mixture. After 14 days strain the mixture through the cheesecloth making sure you wring as much of liquid out as possible. Store the tincture in a glass bottles away from light and heat.

A few herbs that work well as tinctures are;

Lemon Balm……… Use the leaves and stems. Medical Use: Mild antidepressant

Yarrow…….. Use leaves, flowers and stems. Medical Use: Fever and flu

California Poppy….. Use leaves, flowers and stems. Medical Use: Sleep aid

Calendula…….. Use the flowers. Medical Use: Digestive and intestinal aid

Oats…….. Use the seed heads. Medical Use: Relaxant

Tinctures are very concentrated use 10-25 drops in a glass of water two or three times a day. If you are trying to avoid drinking alcohol use a glycerin solvent instead. I would purchase a good herbal tincture book and experiment with different solvents and herbal combinations. Make tinctures products that are you’re very own concoctions and apply labels to the bottles with your own trademark. When selling your tinctures make sure you include the costs to prepare and bottle your product in the selling price. You can sell your tinctures on eBay, your own website or at a local specialized retail shop.

If you are not selling your tinctures, they would make excellent gifts for your friends and family. Remember that herbs are used for different purposes, if you are selling or giving away medicinal herb tinctures make sure you label the bottle accordingly. Some herbs do not mix with other medications or should be voided if you are pregnant or nursing. It is advisable to consult with your physician before taking any medicinal supplements.

How do you make a cannabis glycerine tincture?

i made a glycerine tincture. followed all the directions- one ounce of bud, one cup of glycerine in a mason jar, let it sit for 2 months, shake every day for 5 minutes. 2 months came arround, nothing, the tincture sucks ***, doesnt work at all. any ideas what i did wrong?

Soon after surviving an auto-related injury, my beloved Labrador mix, Lucky, started to display unusual health warnings: sitting up and staying in the same position for several minutes, as though he were uncomfortable, then a series of deep, rattling coughing spasms. His appetite also began to decline, as well as his normally active 8 year old activity levels.

Per my preliminary research it appeared he might have heart worm. After the $50 test at the local Veterinarian University proved negative, and upon offering no suggestions as to what my dog was suffering from, the next step was to locate a skilled, experienced and well provisioned vet for additional testing.

Thanks to the recommendation of a friend, we took Lucky in and immediately the good Doctor listened to his heart; he deduced the problem was his heart and took an Electrocardiogram and ran a series of blood tests.

The prognosis was that of an enlarged heart, a severe case, and arrhythmia. Although impossible to reverse an advanced condition (according to the doctor the onset of heart disease can precede for years without any indicators), we were instructed to take him off commercial dog food (high sodium content) and feed him a low salt specialty diet brand, and administer a diuretic for the fluid build up in his lungs and a heart medication to keep the heart functioning effectively. This would ensure a normal lifespan, albeit, his usual high energy was likely to be reduced. Without these changes and additions, Lucky would quickly perish, the Doctor warned, within a one to three month period of time.

Identifying my dog’s health issue was only half the battle. The cost of the imported dog food and the heart meds were far beyond our financial ability. Combined, this was going to run more than $300 per month!

Instead, I began to make his meals with rice, carrots, garlic, and parsley mixed with chicken or ground beef and an occasional (cooked) egg. The prescribed diuretic pills were absolutely necessary as the edema was causing severe swelling to his forelegs and beneath his neck; fortunately these are inexpensive and readily available.

Some months previous to all this I had taken an herbal tincture for a severe cold that had attacked my lungs; I recalled how well it had worked. So, I started to give Lucky half a milliliter twice a day and within one day his coughing greatly diminished and within 2 days he had stopped the coughing completely. But his big heart was clearly working extra hard to keep him with us. His appetite had immediately improved but with so much weight loss, rapid heartbeat and constant lethargy, I knew we had to address his heart issue ASAP.

I immediately contacted the Natural Herbal Tincture company here in Costa Rica who produced the Herbal Lung Tincture. When I explained the issue, without hesitation, the master herbalist, Toni Norman, suggested an herbal tincture of Hawthorn Berry.

He is less active than he was before this all started, but now when he rests it sounds as though he is truly resting and not gasping for life.

Note: There are now more holistic vets available, but not so in Costa Rica. Please do your research prior to giving herbs of any type to your pet; there are in fact herbs that are toxic to animals.

If herbs are dried, will they be as effective as live herbs?

That depends on the specific herb, how you plan to prepare it and what its intended purpose is.

Generally speaking, herbs are more potent when fresh. This is why the best herbal tinctures are made with fresh herbs. Herbal poultices are also much more effective when made with fresh herbs. Some herbs are toxic when fresh and must be dried before being able to safely use them.

If you can provide more information, I can give you a more specific answer.

Urinary tract infection is a phrase used to describe a collection of symptoms that occur due to irritation, inflammation or obstruction of the urinary tract. In felines, it is most often related to the lower urinary tract which is comprised of the urinary bladder, urethra and penile urethra. Symptoms to look for include:

* Foul smelling urine.

* The cat straining to urinate, or crying out while urinating.

* Urine containing traces of blood.

* The cat urinating in unusual places and often in small amounts.

Any of the organs along the urinary tract can be affected by urinary infections in cats. Infections of the bladder and inflammation of the urinary bladder, known as cystitis, are two of more common disorders of the lower feline urinary tract. Although infection is mostly due to bacteria, inflammation can certainly occur in the absence of infection. Treatment of a cat’s urinary infection generally depends on the underlying cause and level of severity.

The common conventional treatment of antibiotics to eliminate the infection. While feline urinary tract infections respond well to them, it is common knowledge that antibiotics should be used only when necessary as there is a tendency for them to become ineffective over time and if overused. They do a good job of killing the bacteria that caused the UTI, but have an unfortunate tendency to kill the good bacteria at the same time. This decline in friendly flora in the cat’s body can lead to the rise of other diseases that may be a great deal less responsive to treatment than the original urinary tract infection.

Unlike conventional medical solutions, alternative homeopathic and holistic medicines to treat urinary infections in cats look beyond the immediate cause and instead concentrate on treatment in conjunction with boosting immunity. There are herbal remedies derived from natural substances that have antibiotic properties. This approach not only spares the cat from the harmful side effects of antibiotics, it provides a safeguard against the probability of a recurrence.

A combination of herbal tinctures of equal parts of buchu, Echinacea, uva ursi and pipsissewa is the most recommended natural remedy for optimum feline urinary tract health. It can be mixed into the cat’s food, but bear in mind that, while useful for the urinary tract infection, alcohol tinctures are generally recommended for short term use only in felines. Herbal teas prepared from a combination of horsetail, marshmallow root, goldenrod, elderberry and parsley are a better choice for extensive treatment. You may give your cat a tablespoon of cooled tea three times daily while the symptoms last.

You may be familiar with the efficacy of cranberry juice for the mitigation of UTIs in humans. It performs the same service for cats urinary infections as well. It works by preventing bacteria from clinging to the cells lining the walls of the urinary tract. It also acidifies the urine, and as bacteria cannot survive in such an environment, urinary infections are thus held off. As cats tend to dislike the taste, a better choice would be cranberry extract, as a concentrate can be more easily forced in.

Another homeopathic remedy effective in the treatment of cat urinary infections is cantharis, and is especially recommended if you have discovered blood in your cat’s urine. Cantharis eases the discomfort that arises while the cat is straining to urinate. Swift relief is had when two to three pellets of 30C potency is provided at hourly intervals. You may place the pellets in the cat’s mouth, and they are automatically absorbed by the mucous membrane.

If it is necessary for your cat to submit to a course of antibiotics to fight off the infection, you can counter the deleterious effects of the drugs on friendly bacteria with supplements of lactobacillus. One eighth of a tablespoon twice daily is sufficient for cats weighing 20 pounds or less. Be sure to administer the supplement at least 2 hours after the antibiotic has been given. Fresh yogurt is an excellent alternative for restoring the balance of the flora in the cat’s body, and is very enthusiastically received by the patient.

In tandem with a natural diet, homeopathic remedies for cats provide a great arsenal in the fight against feline urinary tract infections. Make sure your cat is drinking a sufficient amount of water — filtered or spring water, if your cat objects to the chemicals coming from your taps. To help prevent recurrences, periodically add vitamin C supplements to your cat’s diet, and either provide them with home cooked food or one of the many excellent commercial cat foods formulated specifically to deal with feline bladder and urinary health.

Is out of date herbal tea really bad to drink?

Will it be bad for me now rather than good or will the benefits just be weakened?

Have you heard of Chaga? Natural Home Treatments For Stretch Marks

STRETCH MARKS

Stretch marks (striae) are relatively common, even in males. It is not completely understood how they form, but there are several theories. One is that stretch marks form simply when the skin is stretched to the point of breaking and a scar is formed. Another interesting theory is that stretch marks are caused by an increased level of glucocorticoids (cortisol). Glucocorticoids prevent connective tissues from forming the collagen and elastin fibers need to keep the skin tight, and dermal layer then tears. Some people may be more genetically prone to stretch marks than others. Skin type may be a factor; dryer skin has less elasticity than oily skin, and is more prone to stretch marks.

TREATING STRETCH MARKS

There are several extra steps you can take for the reduction of your stretch marks. Consider your skin care regimen, and fine-tune it to meet the needs of skin that is damaged, requires cellular repair and the stimulation of collagen and elastin production.

Nutrition: An adequate amount of water, vitamins E, C, selenium, and alpha lipoic acid, as well as enough monounsaturated fats (olive oil) and gamma lineolic acid (borage oil) are vital for keeping your skin strong and healthy and able to repair itself.

The basic treatment for the reduction of the appearance of scars is to regularly 1) remove the overgrown scar tissue with brisk exfoliation and then 2) encourage the regrowth of normal tissues with use of nutrients and conditioners.

If stretch marks have formed because of weight gain, reducing bodyfat stores (losing weight) can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks by releasing pressure from the skin.

Exfoliation: Stretch marks are similar to scars, there can be either a build up of scar tissue, which results in a raised stretch mark, or tearing and obvious depressions in the skin. Your goal is to break down the malformed collagen and have it slough off, while new, properly constructed collagen and skin cells are formed below. Protection: After exfoliating, apply antioxidant formulas with A, E, C, and alpha lipoic acids to protect the new skin cells from damage. If skin is to be exposed to the sun, apply a sunscreen to prevent further breakdown of newly formed skin cells.

Moisturizer: After exfoliating skin and applying antioxidants, moisturize the area thoroughly. If you are prone to stretch marks, remember to moisturize your body skin daily to avoid developing more stretch marks with weight changes. Aloe Vera should be used to improve skin microcirculation, followed by a layer of lipid-based cream or lotion.

 Sleep: Get plenty of sleep to help your skin regenerate.

 Milk Bath: You can soak your entire body with softening lactic acid by adding a cup or two of skin milk powder to your bath and soaking for 15 to 20 minutes several times a week. For extra enjoyment, add a few drops of your favorite scent to the bath. Rinse the milk bath off under the shower, but do not use soap. If you’re sweaty or dirty, take a quick shower with a mild soap before your milk bath. Moisturize your body skin thoroughly afterwards.

How do you know if your dog has kennel cough?

Well, I recently had to put my dog in a kennel for a day, so that I could go out of town, so I went to get her a bordatella. Anyways, I'm just wondering is it still possible for her to of gotten the kennel cough even though I got her the bordatella? If so what's it like? I only ask because she's been spitting up all day, throwing up, and it sounds to me like a cough. The only other thing that I can think of that MAY be bothering her is that they gave her a different food then what she eats at home. Thanks a bunch!~
