An herbal tincture is an alcohol extract of a herb, resulting in a liquid format that is taken orally. Herbal tinctures have been used throughout the centuries by herbalists, as one of the most effective ways of getting a herbal remedy into the body.
Tinctures are a liquid herbal preparation in Alcohol; this means that the active alkaloids in the herb are fixed on to the alcohol so that when it is taken, all the active herbal alkaloids are absorbed into the blood stream very quickly and fully. This makes them a lot stronger than any powder in a capsule, which are absorbed through the stomach wall slowly and some of the active alkaloids are lost.
The best herbal tinctures are made using fresh herbs. When a herb is fresh it offers its fullest potency and has not yet lost any of its qualities. As herbs dry out they decay and lose potency. This is most vividly understood by comparing fresh parsley with the dried version. No matter how relatively young your dried parsley is, it will never achieve the fresh taste and piquancy of the original herb, bursting with nutrients and taste.
It is fine to mix herbs so long as you know what you are doing. I kindly suggest that you research herbs and there proprieties fully before use.
An Herbal Tincture is a solution of a medicinal substance, like a plant or herb in an alcoholic menstruum. It is also a method of using herbs and plants, extracting their healing properties for the use of treating minor aches and pains, discomforts, ailments, illness, etc. There are different ways to extract from the plants, to utilize their healing properties ranging from fresh plant and dry plant tinctures, hot tea infusion, cold infusion, and decoction. Decoction is an extraction or essence of something, obtained by boiling it down.
1. Start with a clean jar that has a tight fitting lid and the herbs of your choice. If you can use fresh herbs, then fabulous! Fresh material is always preferred but availability is determined by your local bioregion, climate, etc and many quality herbs may not be available. If you cannot locate fresh materials, be sure to get good quality, organic herbs from a reputable supplier. Note: Try not to use powdered herbs; they will be difficult to filter out in the end and the debris will settle in your final product.
2. Chopping the herbs finely in a blender or coffee grinder works well. Then place the materials in the glass jar with a tight fitting lid, such as a canning jar and adding equal parts water and pure grain alcohol. This is a brief description and explanation, which I will go into further in preceding posts.
